Self care Sunday is so underrated! Most of you work yourselves to pieces during the week.  Then you often try to fill your weekend with the rest of your responsibilities.

You try to get extra workouts in, plan family time and weekend trips. You even try to catch up on home improvement. Taking care of cleaning, errands, chores and so many other things often gets included in the mix.

While it is good to take advantage of days where your work-life responsibilities are put on hold, trying to do too much seven (7) days a week is going to lead to a lot of stress.

For this reason, I really urge you to use Sunday as the day of rest each and every week and adjust your schedule accordingly.

Self Care Sunday Ideas

Here’s the thing, Sunday is an important part of every week. It’s a chance to take a break from your busy schedule and do something that brings you joy, whether it is reading, meditating or going out for brunch. Here are some ideas of things you can do on a self care Sunday.

1. Leave Your Work Life for the Work Week

If you have a habit of constantly worrying about work whether you are working or not, you are making the stress and overwhelm in your life a lot worse.

This is often where burnout and anxiety come from.  All of this happens because you are basically working twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week.

It doesn’t matter whether you are in the office, talking to clients, answering emails, or just can’t stop thinking about work. Or, you work outside of your home and leave with work from the office, or work from home and need a different workspace. it’s all the same.

The best thing you can do is to only focus on work while you are at work.

It’s of utmost importance to your mental health and well being that you make sure you have a way to distinguish between work life and home life.

If you happen to work from home, be sure to have a dedicated workspace. This makes it easier to switch your mindset from work to being at home.

You know that if you aren’t in your office or at your desk, you should not be focused on your job. Easier said than done, right?

But, if you change your mindset and adopt this stance, then it is definitely doable.

2. Scheduling Too Much Over The Weekend

Another big mistake with not having proper days of rest and self care is trying to schedule too much into your weekend.

Weekends are great for doing chores, meeting up with friends, and running errands. That being said, however, you should not be dedicating your entire weekend to this.

Believe me, if you do, by Monday morning, you are still exhausted and feel like crap as if you didn’t get a break at all or any time to yourself.

You really need to find the right balance between getting stuff done, and having some free time to yourself.

3. Make An Appointment If You Must

If you have to, make an appointment with yourself to practice self-care and get proper rest.

Take a Rest from Everything on Sunday, for goodness sake give yourself a break.

The best way to find this balance is to have Saturday be your sixth (6th) day of work or to get your personal responsibilities done for the week.

Then leave Sunday open for yourself. Sunday should be your day of rest. Which means not spending all day running errands, doing household chores, or doing any kind of work.

It is normal to want to take advantage of the weekend to get things done. But, when you schedule most or all of them for Saturday, you will have more time on Sunday to take care of yourself.

This doesn’t mean you have to lay around all day, although that’s completely up to you. It’s your day where you get to decide how you want to relax and enjoy your time.

This might be spiritual rejuvenation, an outing with your family. Taking a midday nap or baking cookies are excellent ways to chill. Doing crafts at home is also a great way to relieve stress.

4. Your Mind And Body Need Rest

Remember that both your mind and body need proper rest in order to function at their best.

Even if your idea of resting on Sunday is taking your work life to your couch. The fact of the matter you are still working.

Not because you are on your couch you think that you’re relaxing while tending to your work life. Do not get into this habit!

You should have at least one day or even half a day a week at the very least,  with no work, no chores, and no responsibilities.

This is needed for proper self-care, stress relief, and just allowing your mind and body to relax and unwind.

Here are some ideas of things you can do over the weekend or on Sunday to rest both your mind and body:

5. Write In Your Journal Or Planner

Journaling is a good way to do a brain dump. To get all of those distressing worries and irritating thoughts out of your mind by writing them in your journal or planner.

This allows clearing of your brain and opens the door for you to analyze your thoughts. You can get to the bottom of issues and find the solutions to these issues.

As a result, it prevents you from not stressing so much. That leaves you free to slow down and relax.

6. Meditation And Prayer

If you have tension stress and anxiety, meditation is going to help to relax your body and mind.  This will bring you a sense of peace and calm.

Prayer should also be a key part of your arsenal. It can help you handle the different stresses of life.  When you pray, it strengthens your spiritual connection.

It provides comfort as you believe you are not in this alone as a higher power, God has your back and will help you. This provides hope.

7. Get Active

Exercise doesn’t have to cause you stress or be something that is uncomfortable.

If you are not up for the challenge of vigorous exercises, then think of a light form of exercise that is good for your body and mental health.

Hiking can give you a great cardio workout and also delivers a change of scenery.  Go hiking with a friend or with your dog.

Even taking a walk by the beach or the lake is very relaxing.

If you would like something more soothing then grab your mat and give yoga a shott  Yoga is very calming and relaxing and is an excellent way to reduce stress from the get-go.

8. Spend Time With Loved Ones

It is still okay to be social when you have a day of rest. as long as it is something relaxing that you enjoy.

This might mean going out for drinks, staying in to watch marathons of your favorite TV shows or going out to watch a movie.

Having a family game night, or inviting friends over to watch the game can also be very therapeutic.

9. Spoil Yourself

Take a hot bath. Baths are wonderful for self-care, they allow you some time to yourself and are incredibly relaxing.

Hot baths are so enticing and allow you to rest both your mind and body. You can incorporate essential oils for aromatherapy as well as your candles and some soothing music for a spa-like experience right at home.

It is without question, that as part of your ‘me time’ you can get an impressive manicure and pedicure by doing it yourself. Gather all the essentials you need for this pampering session.

You’ve already committed to doing this so there is no need to rush. Taking it slow is the key to getting fabulous results every time

Healthy and glowing skin makes you feel good about yourself. Getting a facial is also a great way to take care of you.

You can benefit from massage therapy. It is effective for busting stress and tension in the muscles and therefore bring about relaxation.

You can have a DIY facial treatment at home or if you choose to, you can go to a Spa.  But, you will need to get your massage from a therapist. These treatments will help to get you refreshed, recharged and rejuvenated.

10. Unplug From The Grid

Even though you might feel that life stops if you don’t have your cell phones or detach from your other computers, you must unplug from technology.

We have become so addicted to social media and the internet in general.  Breathe in the sights, sounds, and smells of life without being glued to your electronic devices, in particular, your cell phone.

Mind you, I’m not knocking technology because it has tons of advantages but it also has its disadvantages. Being excessively engaged can negatively impact your health and well-being. It can become addictive.

11. Read A Book

This is a great way to chill and get cozy in your favorite couch or lay in bed and read a book.

Make it a book you want to read for personal reasons, not work, school, or that involves other responsibilities.

Overall, this is a good time to read for leisure, depending on what you are most interested in. Just to indulge and enjoy.
